Important tips in the maintenance of Gutters

Gutters are an important component of the exterior appearance of a house. They help to direct a large amount of precipitation away from the foundation of the house. If gutters are damaged, there is a possibility of moisture entering the basement or even the interior of the house. This article will introduce readers to the most common gutter problems and how to identify and repair them.

Leaking at the Joints:
Many modern gutters are seamless, but older houses may still have gutters that are connected by two metal plates, which often leads to leaks at the joints. Regular inspection is crucial since people usually don't check for leaks during rainfall. On a clear day, you can spray water from a garden hose onto the roof above the gutter. If there are any issues, you will notice the leaks within 3-5 minutes. Make a note of the location of the leaking joints.

The repair process is relatively simple. Once the gutter is completely dry, thoroughly clean the area near the leaking spot and apply waterproof tape or seal it with silicone adhesive.

Small Holes in Aluminum Gutters:
You can use roof-specific putty to patch up small holes. Again, ensure the area around the leak is dry and apply putty to seal the small holes. Take care not to apply an excessive amount of putty as it may hinder complete drying. If it is the rainy season, make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast to avoid your efforts going to waste.

Large Holes in Aluminum Gutters:
Cover the hole with a piece of metal and secure it with putty, ensuring the edges of the metal piece are also covered with putty to prevent water from seeping underneath. Similarly, ensure the entire area is clean and dry to ensure good adhesion.

Gutter Sagging:
Over time, gutters may sag, causing water to flow out prematurely. The solution to fixing sagging gutters is to add drainage slopes. Place a wedge in the sagging area and lift it until it aligns with the rest of the gutter. Avoid lifting it too high, as it may create a new "low point" that collects water.

Water Overflowing from the Gutters:
Overflowing water is often caused by blockages. Leaves, dust, and other debris can cause gutter blockages. Regular cleaning or cleaning as needed is essential. Another reason could be that the gutters are not deep enough or that there is excessive rainfall. In such cases, replacing the gutters may be necessary.

Leaking Downspouts:

This is a serious problem as it prevents water from entering the drainage system, causing it to leak directly in a specific corner of the house's exterior. The best solution is to replace the downspouts rather than risking severe damage to the foundation of the house.
